GCSE Results Day - What Next?

Results Day is an exciting time but can sometimes mean choices have to be made. 

The most important thing for young people and parents to remember is ‘Don’t panic!’ If you or a young person you are supporting needs to rethink their choices due to results there is lots of advice and support available.

Who might help?

At your school, the local careers adviser who provided careers guidance to pupils may be offering email/telephone support this week – information about their availability might be advertised on the school website or have been shared with results. Your school will also have a careers leader who coordinates the careers provision. They might also be able to help point you in the right direction if you need support.

The college or training provider who you have applied to will have whole teams of people ready to support you with advice and guidance about alternative courses or different starting points that can work with the grades that you have achieved.

The National Careers Service has great online information and a helpline through which you can access advice around exam results or next steps.  You can ring them on 0800 100 900 or  chat to an adviser through webchat.

There will be also be some support on offer through your local council – links are included below.

There are so many different ways to move forward after GCSEs. The Skills for Careers site explains these well. Locally at Marches Careers Hub we have also developed a flipbook resource which can help young people and those who support them understand and explore different choices. In this flipbook you’ll find lots of information about what is available locally and links to resources that can help. 

All of our colleges and many of our local training providers offer foundation level courses for young people who need more support to get started. Some of these are accessible without any formal GCSE grades, so there really is a starting point for everyone. 

Within the Marches we have a great range of opportunities including apprenticeships, academic pathways, technical and vocational courses, so whilst getting unexpected results can be disappointing – there will always be another way, a different route, a new starting point.
